The Great Cold Valley and Zbojnicka Chalet
I spent another great hiking spring day in the High Tatras in the last June. The high elevation trails were still closed during our stay, due to the seasonal closure. It usually lasts from the 1st of November till the 15th of June. Without breaking this rule we could ascend only to one of the high elevation chalets. This time we decided for Zbojnícka chata (Zbojnicka hut, 1 960 m. a.s.l.) at the end of the Veľká studená dolina (Great cold valley). If you are looking for one day hike in High Tatras, take this hike as an inspiration.
The weather couldn´t be better. The temperature was pleasant, sun was shining and sky was blue (as seen in the photos). The whole valley resounded with thundering waterfalls and mountain streams, of quickly melting traces of snow.
Early in the morning we took the tram from Tatranská Lomnica to Starý Smokovec. To save energy for the hike, we decided to use the funicular to get to the Hrebienok (hyperlink). With funicular it takes around 10 minutes, instead of 40 minutes walking. The funicular operates from 8:30, so we had to wait for a while. From Hrebienok we walked the red trail to the place called “Nad Rainerovou chatou”. It’s a junction of many hiking trails and then we followed the blue trail, which has brought us to the chalet.
The difficulty of this hike is moderate and it took us approximately 3 hours to walk from Hrebienok to the chalet, but we weren´t rushing. We reached the chalet amongst the firsts and enjoyed cabbage soup (Kapustnica) and tea at the sunny terrace. The chalet was slowly starting to fill up with other tourists looking for refreshment after the hike. For some of them it was the end of their trip, but some other people were preparing for the next part of their hike for example across the Priečne sedlo (saddle) to Malá studená dolina (Small cold valley). During the closure this is not permitted, but some people don´t respect the closure.
But it didn´t bother me. They looked like experienced hikers, who know what to do. But I couldn´t quite believe, what I saw later. On the way back down we met a couple, who really didn´t look like the nature lovers, based on their clothing and outfit. (I know, it´s not okay to judge people, but I was just right in this case. 🙂 ) The man was smoking the cigarette while resting by the stream. I was wondering, what´s he going to do with the cigarette end. After ending his cigarette he did, what I feared the most. He simply threw the cigarette end in the stream. Please don´t do this. And I believe not many or none of you would do this.
Otherwise I have nothing to complain about our hike. I recommend everyone to visit Great cold valley, because it´s beautiful with a lot of greenery, mountain streams and glacier lakes.
