Hiking all day every day may be tiring and all hikers need to take a day off every now and then. There are couple of interesting things to do on a „free“ day. Going to thermal pools, do rafting or biking. Scroll down for an inspiration.

1 Vrbov thermal pool

Hot geothermal water is really helpful after couple of days of constant walking. It helps your joints and muscles to recover. The best time for a visit is in the evening when the air is cooler or anytime during the day if the temperature is not so high. I recommend the thermal pools in the village of Vrbov. It´s opened every day until 22 PM and the cheapest tickets cost around 10 EUR/person.

2 Biking in Liptov region

Liptov region is probably the best region for biking. You basically bike in a big valley between the High and Low Tatras mountains. It doesn´t matter in which direction you look, you will always see some nice landscape. Some of the routes are more difficult and some of them easier. You can bike from one village to another on a road or go off-road and enjoy fast downhills after going up first. You can find the best trails around Liptovsky Hradok, Liptovsky Peter, Vavrišovo or Podbanske.

3 Spiš castle

If you are interested in learning about history, you shouldn´t miss out the Spiš castle, which is one of the biggest castles in Slovakia and the whole Europe. It is also listed in UNESCO World Heritage list. The first parts of the castle were built back in 12th century and was getting bigger and bigger over the next centuries. The castle is opened from April till November. The entry fee is 6 EUR. You can use an audio guide for free, you just have to pay 10 EUR deposit.

4 Caves – Belianska and Dobsinska Ice Cave

There are 2 interesting caves in the vicinity of the Tatra mountains. The one is Belianska cave in Tatras and other one is Dobsinska Ice cave in the south of Slovak Paradise. Dobsinska is listed in UNESCO too and it´s one of the biggest ice caves in Europe. You can find all the necessary information about opening hours, entry fees… on the website of Slovak Caves Administration.

Tricklandia is an interesting place full of visual illusions in the village of Stary Smokovec. It became so popular that you have to do a booking in advance through their website. Look at the pictures below to see how does it look like there.

6 Rafting on river Dunajec

River Dunajec creates a natural border of Poland and Slovakia. Driving there from the area of Tatra mountains takes about an hour. You can choose a shorter or longer program and also type of raft. Either a traditional wooden one or normal rafts. You don´t need any previous experience as the river is not so wild and rafting there is appropriate for everybody.
